Most indie authors spend money on promotions without a clear picture of what's working. BookBub features, newsletter mentions, social media ads, free runs — the options are endless, but which ones actually deliver results?
The answer lies in tracking.
Why Tracking Matters
Without tracking, you're flying blind. You might spend $50 on a BookBub feature and $30 on a newsletter promo in the same week. Your sales spike, but which promotion caused it? Without data, you can't answer that question — and you can't make smarter decisions next time.
What to Track
For every promotion you run, record:
- The platform — BookBub, Freebooksy, Robin Reads, your own newsletter, newsletter swaps, Facebook ads, etc.
- The date — when the promotion ran
- The cost — what you paid (even if it was $0 for a swap)
- The book — which title was promoted
- The promotion type — free run, 99-cent deal, countdown deal, full price feature
- The results — downloads, sales, page reads, click-throughs, new subscribers
Click Tracking With Campaign Links
One of the most powerful tracking tools available to indie authors is the campaign link. Instead of sharing your regular book URL, you create a unique trackable link for each promotion channel.
For example:
- One link for your newsletter mention
- A different link for your Facebook post
- Another for a swap partner's newsletter
- Another for your Instagram bio
Each link tracks clicks separately, so you can see exactly how much traffic each channel generated. Over time, this data shows you which marketing channels consistently deliver and which ones aren't worth the effort.
The Promotion Calendar
A visual calendar showing all your promotions helps you spot patterns. Maybe you notice that promotions in the first week of the month consistently outperform mid-month ones. Or that spacing your promotions two weeks apart works better than clustering them.
Having all your releases, promotions, and marketing events on a single calendar also prevents scheduling conflicts. You don't want a BookBub feature and a newsletter swap running on the same day if they're promoting different books.
Turning Data Into Strategy
After tracking promotions for a few months, you'll start to see clear patterns:
- Which promo sites deliver the best ROI
- Which price points drive the most reads
- Which times of year are best for launches
- Which swap partners send the most engaged readers
This data transforms your marketing from guesswork into strategy. The authors who track their promotions religiously are the ones who consistently grow their readership and income.
